In every game, there are winners and there are losers. And then there are the five teams who won’t be competing in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

With less than two months to go, the Qatar World Cup is drawing closer by the day. The World Cup is unarguably the biggest sporting event of the year, and billions if not millions of viewers will be watching the game with bated breath. Who will secure the top honors for their country? And who will lose?

For the Qatar edition, there were 32 available slots for the teams to play in the tournament. Only those who made it out of the tough World Cup Qualifiers have the honor of representing their countries in the prestigious showpiece event.

We take a look at a few notable teams who crashed out during the qualifying rounds. These are top teams with world-class players we’re talking about here.

Nigeria

One of the strongest teams from the African continent, Nigeria’s absence in the world cup will be sorely felt.

This is the first time since 2006 that Nigeria has failed to make the cut.

In the qualifying stage, Nigeria drew against Ghana. Due to the away goals rule, Ghana qualified with a 1-1 score.

Chile

Chile has failed to qualify for Qatar Cup. This marks the second consecutive time they didn’t make it.

The 2016 Copa America winner was only 5 points shy of qualifying.

They only won five out of the 18 games during qualifiers.

Colombia

Talk about a near miss. Colombia missed out with just a one-point difference!

Peru had one more point than Colombia in the final table, dealing a blow to the 2001 Copa America winners’ dreams.

The fourth-best nation in South America will be sitting out on the 2022 games.

Sweden

A major European football nation won’t be part of the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022.

Sweden lost the deciding tie 0-2 against Poland.

To put it into perspective, this is the second-highest ranked team in Europe we’re talking about.

Italy

The most shocking exclusion is that of Italy, the four-time world cup winners.

Italy is also the reigning European champs, which is why Azzurri’s exit has taken the football world by surprise.

Italy lost 1-0 in the playoff semis against minnows North Macedonia.

What do you think about these teams not participating in the Qatar World Cup 2022?
